Halifax Farmers' Market - NS, Canada (2004)

The Project

A new home for the Farmers' Market in the disused Pier 22 building on the Seawall in Halifax.

The Brief

The building is required to provide more needed space for the Halifax Farmers Market. It needs to be flexible to allow for different trading patterns – and could also be used for holding public events. This must be achieved at 60% lower CO2 emissions than typical buildings, with a goal to eventually go "off grid".

The Solution

The existing heritage building has been sensitively re-insulated to reduce heating energy whilst allowing the strong Nova Scotian sun to provide some free heat and plentiful daylight. The energy and water systems include solar tubes linked with ground-sourced heat pumps, heat recovery systems, in-floor heating, roof mounted wind turbines and gravity-fed rainwater harvesting. The building roof becomes a garden for food production as well as a habitat for nature, which is accessible for visitors. Archineers managed the sustainable goals and provided commercial and technical advice for their successful implementation.
